Menengai Crater
Menengai Crater is one of the most interesting places to visit in Kenya. It has beautiful scenery and people believe that bad spirits roam the area.
At 90 km2 and almost 2500 m above sea level, Menengai Crater is a big draw. It is thought to be the second biggest caldera in the world. It has stunning views of Lake Nakuru.
Thoughts and Peace
Menengai Crater is a place of violence and legends. It is just outside of Nakuru. This is where the Ilpurko Maasai beat the Ilaikipiak Moran (also called Maasai) in a fight over grazing land. Native Americans threw the losers off the edge of the crater, which is how the place got its name. The fumaroles in the crater are thought to be the souls of the dead fighters trying to get to heaven.
People from all over the world come to the Crater to pray and think. Some people who have been there say they have felt the presence of God. However, some people think it is haunted by evil spirits that hold people prisoners.
A lot of people are said to have disappeared after exploring the area, and others come back completely lost. Reports say that spirit beings are farming the ground on the crater floor. Eyewitnesses say that the tractors were used to plow, plant crops, and harvest them all in one hour. People who have been there say they have seen an umbrella fly up from the crater floor when it rains.
There are stories from people who live in the area that they saw the devil riding a motorcycle on Devil’s Hill, which is next to the crater.
Going to Menengai Crater
The Kenya Forest Service looks after the forest around the Menengai Crater and keeps it safe. You can see Kirk’s dik dk, a thin mongoose, and there are many flowering plants and grasses. This is where you can see black-faced vervet monkeys, tree hyrax, and mountain reedbuck. It is also home to the Verreaux eagle, the Abyssinian ground hornbill, the African Marsh Harrier, and many other bird species that live in forests.
