What to Anticipate on your East Africa Safari
Starting in Nairobi, your East Africa safari journey will take you aboard a light aircraft to the Masai Mara. Experienced Masai guides will lead you to their preferred undiscovered locations for great all year round game viewing and photography.
Flying into Tarangire National Park, renowned for its large elephant herds, particularly in the dry season when elephants migrate into Tarangire for the life giving water from the perennial Tarangire River, we move on to Tanzania.
Camping for two nights in the crater rim valley, your next stop is the amazing Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which provides convenient access to the crater bottom. Many mammals live permanently in the crater. Giving all year great wildlife viewing, including the big 5.
Fly into the Serengeti, remaining three nights in the distant southern region. Perfect for observing cheetah, with knowledgeable guides showing you the cheetah’s habitat and behaviour.
Your last destination is in Saadani National Park, just on the Indian Ocean’s coastlines. Saadani National Park’s mix of river, jungle and coastal habitats provides a distinctive safari experience. Discover the region via boat, hiking and game drives. Home to four of the big five (only the rhino is absent), the park is the only coastal wildlife sanctuary of its kind in East Africa.
Day 1 – 3: Masai Mara Getaway
Fly from Nairobi into the Masai Mara, which has lots of resident animals all year round and is home to the huge migration from June to October. From the camp, which is directly on the banks of the Mara River, game viewing begins; a pod of hippos entertains you with their attempts to stay cool.
Watch a range of game and birds on game drives over the rich ecosystems of savannah, riparian forest and woodland. Take a cultural trip to discover more about the Maasai tribal way of living. Enter a Maasai village under the direction of a Maasai guide and see first-hand their unique culture, beliefs and rituals.
Walk with a naturalist to discover more about the African flora and insects and their relevance in sustaining this great environment and therapeutic applications still in use now. An optional activity is to watch dawn break, drifting across the savannah in a hot air balloon, concluding with a champagne brunch out in the bush.
Day 4 – 5: Start of the Tanzanian Odyssey
Fly back to Nairobi from the Masai Mara to catch your aircraft to Kilimanjaro International Airport; your Tarangire flight starts there. In a quiet section of the park, the super contemporary camp is just a short drive from the airport.
Marvel at the gigantic baobabs scattered all around the park. On game drives, wander down the riverside as the herds descend to the water’s edge to drink their thirst. High in the branches, glance up into the shady trees searching for languishing leopards. Look for oryx and kudu, wonderful picturesque animals with their elaborate horns.
Enjoy bush picnics and sundowners served in remote clearings with wide views dotted with wild creatures. Dine on delectable three-course dinners served beneath an old baobab tree. Around the campfire, toast the day’s sights while exchanging stories with other travelers.
Day 6 – 7: Ngorongoro Crater Delight
A brief flight from Tarangire to Lake Manyara is followed by a lovely automobile transfer via a winding, twisting road up the ancient volcano flanked by overhanging trees. Your first game drive in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area starts at the gate as you approach the camp. Following lunch and a brief rest, have a late afternoon game drive around the rim of the crater with an expert guide describing the different animal behaviour to you.
Leaving camp early to obtain that ideal morning light for some great photos, drive a full day game down on the Ngorongoro Crater floor. You will be amazed by the variety and number of game trapped inside the crater. Add to this the simple beauty, calm and magnitude of the crater, and you will be excused for believing you have seen a piece of heaven here on earth.
Day 8 – 10: Serengeti Cheetah Playground
An early start sends you back down the winding route to Lake Manyara airport to catch your aircraft to the southern section of the Serengeti. A guide will take you on a game drive to your next camp upon arriving. With its wealth of animals and outstanding game watching, enjoy this isolated, distant area of the Serengeti.
Spend your days traversing the great grasslands observing and shooting cheetahs. Your knowledgeable guide will help you find known individual cheetahs and show you how to snap pictures that could support the continuous cheetah study project running in this part of the Serengeti.
Search for the many predators that inhabit this region of the park during early morning and late afternoon game drives or full game drives with a picnic lunch. As the great migration comes to these plains to give birth, en mass, in an effort to confound the predators, wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle flood the region between January and March.
With the camp manager detailing the complexities of the night sky to you, using a laser pointer to highlight the constellations, spend some time at night gazing up into the cosmos and appreciating a cosmic safari.
Day 11 – 13: Beach Time in Saadani
Fly from the Serengeti to Arusha and on to Saadani National Park, Tanzania’s newest national park fronting the Indian Ocean. Over the next two days, discover the area on foot with walking safours, game drives, and river safurs. Discover the marvels of the Wami River, bordered by date palms with kingfishers hovering over the water, poised to plunge onto their fishy prey.
Relax with a boat ride across the bay and eat on an isolated sandbank. In the warm, clear Indian Ocean, snorkel, swim, and sunbathe.
Day 14: Dar es Salaam
Enjoy the entire morning on a safari or languishing around the infinity pool seeing the abundant birdlife and ocean with an afternoon flight to Dar es Salaam. Your trip finishes and your onward travel plans start when you board your flight to Dar es Salaam after lunch.
