Masai Mara, Kenya is where we’re going.
Bush camp Richards Camp is in Kenya. It is in a private reserve on the edge of the Masai Mara. A lot of plains animals, like Wildebeest, Zebra, and Gazelles, make this area one of the most famous places to go on an African tour. On this Kenya wildlife tour, you can go on exciting game drives led by Maasai guides and see lots of interesting wildlife.
Feel the thrill of walking around and discovering the area. Find out how to stay alive in the bush and how to find animals. There is a flat-topped Acacia tree in the middle of the Mara that makes a nice spot for a picnic. You can watch animals graze nearby. Cool off with a sundowner and watch the sun go down. Then, go on a night game drive back to camp.
Gather around the campfire with a tasty three-course meal while the Milky Way shines above. Sit back in the tent room and fall asleep to the sounds of Africa at night, like the roar of a lion or the haunting shrieks of a hyena. At this tented camp in the Masai Mara, you can enjoy a classic adventure that will make your Kenya safari tour one you will never forget.
Place to stay
A traditional en suite tent with a view of the fields of the Masai Mara is available for safari stays at Richards Camp.
There are classic tented camps like this one in the Masai Mara, but this one has all the modern conveniences. Each tent is designed differently and has either two twin beds or one double bed. Solar screens are what make electricity. This Kenyan bush camp has a nice bathroom right next to the room with a toilet and a sauna.
Dining at Richards Camp is always a special event. Most of the time, meals are eaten outside, but when it rains, they are moved inside to the cozy dining room. Guests can curl up with a book in the lounge area of the camp between safaris. It has soft couches. Guests can enjoy a special bath in the evening. A deep Victorian bath tub is hidden in a forest clearing and lit by flickering candles. It’s great for a long, relaxing soak.
A private camp is set apart from the main camp and is only a short drive away. It’s a quiet place for a family or group of travelers to relax. It’s eco-friendly and made totally out of canvas, so it can sleep 10 people.
The place
A private reserve lies on the northwest edge of the Masai Mara Game Reserve, about 180 km west of Nairobi. This is where Richards Camp is located.
The Great Migration takes place in the Masai Mara, which is one of the seven natural events. This movement of wildebeest and zebras doesn’t happen every year, but it does happen every year. They have their young on the Serengeti plains, but when the grass dries up, the animals have to move on to find new places to graze and drink. In October, November, and December, they move into the Mara. Along the way, they cross a few rivers that are full of crocodiles, which are very exciting parts.
By Road
The Masai Mara Game Reserve is to the northwest of Richard’s Camp, which is in a private game reserve. This camp in the Kenyan bush is about 180 km (112 mi) west of Nairobi, the country’s city.
By Air
Private planes can land at Richards Camp’s own private airport, which is close to the camp. About twenty minutes away from camp is another airstrip where two daily planned flights from Nairobi land.
Things to do
Richards Camp has exciting guided day and night game drives, walks in the bush with a Maasai warrior, and trips to a Maasai village to learn about their culture.
With a guide
Learn about the animals that live in the Masai Mara by going on a guided bush walk with a Maasai guide. They know the area very well and can show you how to track animals and explain how they act. They will also share what they know about how to stay alive on the African lands.
Game Drives
Go further away on guided game drives in safari vehicles that have been specially modified. The camp is in an area with lots of wildlife. From October to November, the Great Wildebeest and Zebra migration goes through the area. There are more than two million Wildebeest moving around, making this one of the most amazing sights on Earth. Bring a picnic and enjoy a full day of exploration. For lunch, stop under the shade of a flat-topped Acacia tree.
Sundowners the old way
As the sun goes down in a brilliant show, the game drive will stop in a beautiful spot for dessert. Many animals are more busy right before dusk, which means you should be able to see a lot of them. For example, you might see a group of elephants on the plain or a group of giraffes silhouetted against an amber sky.
Night game drives show you Nocturnal World.
The camp is on a private conservancy, so you can go on night game hunts. This is a great chance to see animals that come out at night, like lions getting ready for the hunt, a leopard relaxing in a tree, or a pack of hyenas excited about finding a new kill.
Learn more about the interesting Maasai history and society. For hundreds of years, these herders have lived in peace with the animals, and not much has changed about the way they do things. The cattle are the most important thing to them. They are known for their fancy red dresses, bright beading, and jumping dance style. Meet the people who live in a traditional house called a Manyatta and learn about how they live on the savannahs.
Hot air balloon tours
Take off early in the morning and fly over the Mara’s rolling plains. You’ll see wildebeest and other animals spread out like ants on the plains. If you stay in the air for an hour or two, you’ll land and have a champagne breakfast.
Aerial views of the Mara
The staff at Richards Camp can also set up a beautiful flight above the Mara for guests. It’s a beautiful view to look down at the African fields spread out below.
