The place
The Royal Mara Safari Lodge is perfectly placed to see the Great Migration and lots of other animals while on vacation in Kenya. It looks out over a hippos’ pool in the river.
The Royal Mara is a high-end lodge in Kenya. It is located in the Mara North Conservancy, close to a famous crossing place where many wildebeest cross the Mara River during the Great Migration every year. The house is not far from the area where the BBC show Big Cat Diary was filmed.
Many lion groups live in the area, and you can see a lot of wildlife all year, not just during the Great Migration. One of the great things about staying in the Mara North Conservancy is that there are fewer rules, so people can go on bush walks and see big animals on foot.
How to Get to The Royal Mara
By Air
Wilson Airport in Nairobi and the Masai Mara are connected by two planes a day. For people coming to the Royal Mara, the Mara North airport is the best option. It’s only a 10-minute drive from camp. You can also book a private plane, but they usually cost more. There are also flights between other game and beach spots in Kenya.
By Road
You can also drive to the Royal Mara through the town of Narok. It takes more than 6 hours to get there from Nairobi. Some parts of the road are gravel, and the path has beautiful views. This is the main reason why people are asked to fly into the camp.
Things to do
You can go on organized game drives and bush walks from the Royal Mara Lodge to see everything the Maasai Mara Kenya has to offer.
Game Drives
During your trip to Kenya, go on two daily game drives to see one of the Seven New Wonders of the Natural World. These are done in safari cars that have been specially modified, and each vehicle can hold no more than four people. Maasai hosts from the area lead the drives and know the area very well. They will show you how they keep track of animals and what has been going on in the area for the last few hours.
You can see a lot of wildebeest and zebras. During the Great Migration, there can be hundreds of thousands of them in the area. One of the animals’ favorite places to cross the Mara River is close to the camp. As they try to make the crossing while avoiding the mouths of some of Africa’s biggest crocodiles, this is always a dramatic and tense moment.
Walks with games
There is no better way to see wildlife than to walk together with them. Enjoy game walks while being watched by an armed guide. The walks last for an hour to two hours. They are done slowly, and there are lots of breaks where the guide can teach you something, like how to track animals, or talk about how important a plant is. You will also learn what to do when animals are around to keep yourself and the animals safe.
