Our 12 Day Classic Kenya Family Safari takes you on a magical and interesting trip through the jewel of East Africa, Kenya. There is something fun for everyone in the family. On a family vacation to Kenya, you can see golden savannahs that roll out into the distance, antelope herds that charge, lions roaring at dusk, Masai fighters taking care of their cattle, and dense forests that are full of birds and other rare animals.
At the Daphne Sheldrick’s Elephant Orphanage, you can pet the soft trunks of elephants and look at the rare Rothschild Giraffes at the Langatta Giraffe Center in Nairobi. Then, you’ll go to the top of Mount Kenya to explore the Sweet Waters Reserve and stop at the Rhino Sanctuary in the Ol Pejeta Conservancy on the way. You can see hundreds of pink flamingos at the Great Rift Valley salt lakes of Naivasha and Nakuru. After having high tea at Joy Adamson’s Elsamere, go on a river tour on Lake Naivasha.
During a Kenya wildlife tour, you can follow the Great Wildebeest migration and the animals that hunt them in the Masai Mara Game Reserve. Masai soldiers will teach you how to dance when you visit a traditional homestead. In Mombasa’s lush shores, you can escape to white sand beaches, blue skies with palm trees, and turquoise water that sparkles.
Day 1: Nairobi
Today, in Kenya’s busy city, you begin your safari. Your family meets you at the airport and takes you to your hotel. Depending on when you get there, you might have time to check out a local market or the city and its surroundings. To get a feel for Africa, take in the old colonial buildings and the colorful people. The first part of your epic adventure starts in the evening when you meet your guides and any other travelers.
The National Museum is a popular place to visit. It has most of the important ancient artifacts that the Leakey family found in East Africa, from Ethiopia to the Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania. The Bomas of Kenya are a live, outdoor museum of the tribes of Kenya. There are dance performances there every day.
Day 2: Mount Kenya/Sweetwaters Wildlife Reserve
Today, in Kenya’s busy city, you begin your safari. Your family meets you at the airport and takes you to your hotel. Start your Kenyan wildlife tour at Daphne Sheldrick’s well-run Elephant Sanctuary. Get up close and personal with Africa’s giants and enjoy how playful they are. Our next stop is the Langatta Giraffe Sanctuary, where we can see the Rothschild Giraffe, which is becoming less common. We keep going toward beautiful Mount Kenya (5199 m), which is the second highest mountain in Africa, in the afternoon.
You will have the late afternoon to go on a walk by yourself in the bush around the base of Mount Kenya. This area is famous for the many birds and black and white Colobus monkeys that live there.
Day 3: Mount Kenya/Sweetwaters Wildlife Reserve
Today is the official start of your Kenya wildlife adventure. After breakfast, go on your first game drive in the Sweetwaters Reserve. Along the way, stop by the Rhino Sanctuary in the Ol Pejeta Conservancy to learn more about how it has helped save the critically endangered Black Rhino. A great way to learn more about these amazing animals is to go to the Chimpanzee Sanctuary.
When you get back to camp, have a cultural talk with Masai soldiers and learn about their traditions and nomadic way of life. Then, watch them perform an interesting traditional dance.
Day 4: Lake Nakuru
After breakfast, drive to Lake Nakuru, stopping at a few different Great Rift Valley views along the way. When you get there, have lunch and go on a game drive in the amazing national park. It is a shallow soda lake known for having a lot of flamingos and more than 460 other bird types.
The Lodge has a special room for kids called the “activities room.” This room is full of games, movies, and activities to make sure the kids have a great time on their family vacation in Kenya. Inside the safe grounds, kids can also do things like swim, go on long safaris, and watch birds. They have staff members who are carefully trained to watch over the kids and plan activities for them. Day 5: Lake Naivasha
We’re going to Lake Naivasha today. We have high tea at Joy Adamson’s famous Elsamere farm in the afternoon. Joy Adamson is a British biologist and the author of the hit book “Born Free.” The farm house was bought in 1967 and is now a protection center that teaches people about the environment and the ecology of lakes. Before we go to our lodge for the night, we go to the Elsamere Farm to see the museum and the nursery.
Day 6: Lake Naivasha
In the morning, go on a boat tour on the lake. As you cruise along the surface, look for hippos and other rare animals that live near the water’s edge. You and your family can go on a wildlife walk with a guide this afternoon on your Kenya safari.
The lake is in a swampy area with beautiful views and lots of chances to see animals and birds. One of the best ways to get close to nature and feel like you’re part of the world is to walk through a natural habitat.
Day 7: Masai Mara National Reserve
Today, you’ll head southwest to your next stop, the Masai Mara, which is thought to be one of the best game parks in Africa. Go on a game drive in the park in the late afternoon. People know the Mara for its green fields that roll out into rivers and riverside forests.
The Mara is the crown gem of Africa. It is home to the most amazing animals and is where the famous Wildebeest Migration takes place. Large groups of lions, elephants, giraffes, different kinds of gazelles, zebras, cheetahs, and leopards can be found all over the park.
Day 8: Masai Mara National Reserve
Today, on your family vacation in Kenya, you will spend the whole day visiting the park on game drives in the morning and afternoon. People who want to see the park’s panoramic views from above can easily book an extra hot air balloon ride, and travelers are woken up early to see the golden dawn break over the Savannah plains.
The Mara is a great place to see wildlife, and if you’re patient, you can often see something truly unique, like a pride of lions stalking their food or a lone leopard getting its kill from the high branches of an acacia tree. We meet some interesting Kenyan Maasai herders during a visit to a culture homestead in the afternoon.
Day 9: Nairobi – Mombasa
We leave early in the morning to go back to Nairobi. Along the way, we pass coffee plantations and busy towns. When you get to the airport, take a regional flight to Mombasa. When you get there, you’ll find a fascinating city where people are friendly and smile, where you can eat delicious seafood, and where Arab, Swahili, British, and Portuguese past has left their mark on the culture.
Your family is picked up at the airport and taken to your beach hotel in Kenya. You can do what you want with the rest of the day. The hotel has many water and sports activities that guests can choose from, such as fishing, tennis, volley ball, glass-bottom boat rides, snorkeling, and daily family shows and entertainment.
Day 10: Mombasa
A walk of Mombasa Old Town will give you the freedom to move around the city all day. Take a look at Fort Jesus, Kilindini’s natural deep-water harbor, and the intricately carved buildings that show how Mombasa’s trade culture and Portuguese and Islamic architecture have shaped the area. If you’re on vacation with your family in Kenya, you should check out the open-air markets and bazaars, talk to people who make crafts, and walk along the famous round alleyways.
If you want to spend an evening on a traditional dhow, you could go on a Tamarind Dhow tour in Mombasa Old Harbour. This cruise has great food, music, and a romantic atmosphere.
Day 11: Mombasa
You can take it easy today on the lovely beach in front of your Kenya beach hotel and enjoy the island vibe. You can kayak, canoe, or dive among the coral reefs’ many colors.
You can do extra things if you want to, like take a day trip to Malindi and Gedi, go on a nature walk in Bamburi to see the jungle, or visit the Ngomongo Village to learn about the local tribes. Take a full-day boat tour to see Kisite Marine National Park and Wasini Island. The tour includes lunch and lots of chances to swim. (Comes with Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner)
Day 12: Mombasa
Today is the last day of your Classic Kenya Family Safari. You can spend it however you want at your Kenya beach accommodation before being taken to Mombasa International Airport for your trip home. Before breakfast, take one last walk along the beach or a cool swim in the water.
