East Africa Memories
“I have seen the migration a few times in both the Masai Mara and the Serengetti.” If those things are true, I will die a happy man! W.S.
Crater of Ngorongoro
Ngorongoro Crater was formed by a volcano and is thought to have been higher than Kilimanjaro. It is now a unique ecosystem with its own water source that is home to thousands of animals. It has a mysterious vibe that is hard to explain. The idea of Eden comes to mind, maybe because of how remote it is or how varied it is. Ngorongoro will be on any list of my top ten places.
“I sat there for the rest of the trip and looked at the beautiful scenery, wondering when we would get there.” It got hotter all day, and putting your head out the window didn’t help. All you could see was dust and warm air. Of course, there are no road signs. The locals use small rocks and bushes to figure out when it’s time to stop.
The Race to Find Our Roots
Big on my list of things to do was to visit Olduvai Gorge. People in the Leakey family have spent a lot of time here researching our family history. It is one of the most important places in the world to find our oldest ancestors. On the way from Ngorongoro to Serengeti, you can stop at Olduvai. It is a must-see for anyone interested in the past.
“The best part of my trip to East Africa was sitting on the porch of my tent at a place called Sinya.” To my right was a group of about thirty Masai Askaries singing and chanting in time with each other. To my left was a bachelor herd of elephants, each with close to 100 pounds of ivory on its tusk, and in the background was Mount Kilimanjaro, with the late afternoon sun turning the snowcap a soft pink. W.S.
At almost 6,000 meters, Kilimanjaro is the tallest mountain in Africa and one of the world’s tallest mountains that stands alone. I have been interested in it since I was a child. I haven’t had the chance to climb the mountain yet, but the picture of the elephant in Amboseli with the mountain in the background makes me feel better.
There are a lot more game areas and national parks in Tanzania and Kenya than the ones I’ve talked about and visited. Selous and Ruaha are two rural parks in southern Tanzania. Tsavo and the Aberdares are two parks in Kenya. The following places are on my list of places to visit soon.
The roads range from bad asphalt to fine dirt paths. East Africa is full of exciting things to do. There are some roads that will test your strength for sure. The service is great, and the lodges and other tourist sites are top-notch.
The coast of Kenya and the island of Zanzibar are famous around the world as great places to relax after a rough trek or just to go on vacation to the beach. The coast is a great place to go on vacation because it has a lot of history with slave traders and sailors. You can scuba dive and swim in the water, and the beaches are beautiful.
The worries I had at first about going to East Africa are long gone. Some people ask me about all the tourists, but I didn’t notice any crowds. As with any place to see animals, there will be places that are crowded. Kenya and Tanzania are the best places to see wildlife and see a wide range of beautiful landscapes.
