Maralal International Camel Derby
The Northern Frontier of Kenya is a wild and lawless area where people still move around with the seasons. It is also home to the Maralal International Camel Derby, which is one of the most unique events on the continent every year. It’s a simple, dusty town in Samburu County that sits on top of a hill. It is a busy place for the Samburu people who live there; the streets are always full of camels, fighters in bright clothes, and traders.
Every year, Maralal has a Derby Day.
People ride and watch the race in Maralal every year from all over the world. It’s a race where both pros and beginners are trying to get to the top.
The camel race starts in the middle of town, where a bunch of heavy, awkward camels are vying for a spot in history. Some people are running backwards, while others are running off to the side. There is a lot of noise, color, and chaos. The more skilled riders are able to race past the crowd of people waiting for the finish line.
If you don’t want to ride a camel, there is also a bike race and a 10 km running race. During these races, you can enjoy the beautiful scenery of Samburu County while competing on a tough track. There are both professional bikes and beginner bikes from the area that enter the race, but the amateur bikes don’t always make it to the finish line.
Folk dances are also going on all the time in town, making it feel like a real-life culture show. This desert town turns into a mix of noise, color, and style when locals and tourists get together for a fun, cultural experience. For just one day a year, if you happen to be in Kenya at that time, don’t miss it! Come see the best of Samburu culture.
